The appetite for British-made food products seems to have accelerated over the last twelve months.
British chocolate makers Hames Chocolates believe that the increased support for British-made products is being driven by a combination of factors. This includes consumers actively seeking out foods that are made and packaged sustainably, have lower food miles and wanting to support homegrown producers.
Carol Oldbury, Managing Director of Hames Chocolates explains how they have grown their chocolate bar production over the last year “It is important for brands to explain where British-made food and drink products come from because consumers are actively looking to support homegrown producers. However, it is also equally important to tell this story in an authentic way.
Last year Hames, looking to make some of the best chocolate bars in the UK launched our Great British Chocolate bar range. Made with British milk and sustainably grown cocoa we chose to highlight the provenance of our Great British Chocolate range by displaying British cultural icons, such as umbrellas, teapots, bowler hats and red buses, on each pack, in order to highlight that it’s made in Great Britain.
The appetite for British-made brands is at an all-time high. This is due to shoppers looking to feel more emotionally-connected with what they eat and how it is grown. Ultimately, this trend has led to consumers having a greater desire to know more about the food they eat and its provenance. Therefore, there is a significant sales opportunity for brands and retailers to capitalise on provenance and those that maximise this trend will likely thrive in the marketplace in the future.
As a family venture that has been making chocolate in Lincolnshire for more than fifteen years, our origin has always been a huge part of Hames Chocolates’ identity. However, with consumers increasingly looking for homegrown producers, our brand story is now of even greater importance. “
