Peanut Statement Hames Chocolates Ltd

Peanut Statement

Peanuts are a common cause of food allergy, caused when the immune system reacts to the protein found in peanuts.
Hames Chocolates Ltd does not use peanuts as an ingredient in any finished products or allow any products containing peanuts into its production facility.

Hames Chocolates Ltd does purchase a limited range of pre-packed traded goods that contain peanuts.

We take the following precautions to reduce the risk of cross contamination from peanuts to the lowest possible level:

•    Product Specifications for all traded goods are reviewed before purchase and any containing peanuts are identified.
•    Following delivery to our premises all goods containing peanuts are confined to a dedicated locked storage cage in our Warehouse.  Access to this cage is restricted to Warehouse personnel only, and the area is only unlocked when orders for traded goods require picking and despatching.
•    Traded Goods containing peanuts are supplied pre-packed by an approved GFSI certified manufacturer, in robust tamper evident packaging which is not opened by personnel at Hames Chocolates Ltd.
•    Warehouse staff are trained to identify and reject or segregate any damaged goods on delivery and to follow strict allergen cleaning procedures should any spills occur.
•    Hames Chocolates Ltd.’s staff and visitors are not permitted to bring peanuts, nuts and seeds on site for personal consumption.

The FSA states that:
“A precautionary allergen label should only be used when, following a risk assessment, a risk of allergen cross-contact within the supply chain is identified that cannot be removed through risk management actions.”
And
“Excessive use of precautionary allergen labels can unnecessarily limit consumer choice, and devalue the warning for consumers with a food allergy or intolerance.”

Hames Chocolates Ltd therefore does not use precautionary allergen labelling for peanuts on its finished product packaging.

However, it is important to note that Hames Chocolates Ltd does not make the claim that its finished products are ‘Peanut-Free’ and would advise its customers of the same.
